Coastal forts, drive-in beaches, Theyyam rituals, toddy shop curries, mangrove kayaking — a curated 3-day local's guide.
കണ്ണൂർ — ലൂംസ് ആൻഡ് ലോർ
Start with the golden hour at this relatively quiet, cliff-side beach. The combination of red laterite cliffs and a calm Arabian Sea makes for one of Kannur's best sunrise views — and it's rarely crowded.
Explore the massive 16th-century Portuguese fort. The views of Mappila Bay from the ramparts are fantastic. Walk the perimeter walls, check out the Dutch and British modifications, and soak in the history of North Kerala's most significant coastal stronghold.
Head to MVK, Soft, or Arafa for Kannur's legendary Malabar biryani.
Drive (or ride) right onto the sand. At 4 km it's Asia's longest drive-in beach. Park facing the sea, let the waves come to you, or take a long walk along the shore with the wind in your face.
Grab some Unnakkaya (stuffed banana fritters) or Pazham Pori with a glass of strong black tea from the local shacks while watching the tide come in. The perfect end to Day 1.
Witness the Muthappan Vellattam Theyyam — performed daily at this unique temple on the banks of the Valapattanam River. Even for non-believers, the atmosphere is electric. The fire, the drumbeats, and the deity answering devotees' questions is something you won't forget.
Located right next to the temple — great if you're travelling with kids or are interested in reptile conservation. Houses a wide variety of Indian snake species.
An authentic toddy shop lunch — Shappu Curry style. This is the real deal: rough wooden benches, palm-leaf plates, and food that punches you in the face (in the best way).
A 1.5-hour scenic drive into the Western Ghats. One of the best viewpoints in Kannur district — a wide plateau at elevation with sweeping views of the forested hills. Bring a light jacket; it gets cool fast after sundown.
Drive down from the hills and check into your stay in Payyannur. This saves significant travel time on Day 3 and puts you right in the heart of the backwater/coastal belt.
Visit the laterite hillock near the college backside. It offers a stunning "infinity" view of the surrounding landscape — paddy fields, backwaters, and the Arabian Sea in the distance. The hillock also has ancient temple and mosque ruins that sit side-by-side, a quiet testament to Kannur's syncretic culture.
Hit Topform or Steak House for a heavy Malabar meal before the afternoon on the water.
One of North Kerala's most beautiful and underrated backwater systems. Choose your pace:
